NC500 – Day 4

Day 4 of the NC500 saw us travel from Lochinever to Ullapool, a gorgeous village on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. As you probably guessed, we made some stops along the way to admire some of the NC500 sights. What was there to see on Day 4 of our NC500 road trip? If you missed out on our previous Day 3, catch up now before reading on.

Ardvreck Castle

Our first port of call on our way down to Ullapool was Ardvreck Castle. The castle was built in 1590 and overlooks the fabulous Loch Assynt. Only the ruins of the castle remain. The walk from the car park to the castle is very short and is magnificent due to the views of the Sutherland mountains and the Loch. The castle is located 4 miles from the village of Inchnadamph, which is one of the best places on the NC500 for spotting deer.

Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve

We then headed further south to Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve. We did the 1 mile steep walk to take in the breathtaking views, and learned all about the history of the Crag. You’ll come away knowing all about the ‘Moine Thrust’ which causes older rocks to sit above younger rocks in some areas of the Crag. If geology isn’t your thing the Crag is still well worth a visit, as it boasts magnificent views and a range of plants and wildlife. We were lucky enough to see three red deer close up on our trip!

Ullapool

We then travelled to our final stop for the day, the beautiful seaside town of Ullapool. On the way in we drove past Ullapool Golf Club, a short 9 hole course with holes parallel to the sea and clubs available to rent. What a perfect place for Hannah’s first round of golf! We made sure that the sea had collected an additional few golf balls before the end of our round. That evening, the sunset over the harbour was beautiful, and so was our dinner at the famous Seafood Shack! The menu is tailored based on whatever is caught on the day. We were lucky enough to sample the langoustines which were to die for – highly recommend!
