NC500 – Day 5

Day 5 of our NC500 road trip was unintentionally very biased towards waterfalls. The impressive Falls of Measach and Victoria Falls are both located between Ullapool and Torridon, where we were staying the night at the Torridon Estate.

Falls of Measach

We made the journey from Ullapool to Torridon, stopping off at two waterfalls on the way. The first of which was the Falls of Measach (pictured above), an impressive 46m waterfall that is located at the head of the Corrieshalloch Gorge, a 15 minute drive from Ullapool. We were able to get a view of the waterfall from the suspension bridge, and further downstream at a purpose built lookout area. The 2km walk around Corrieshalloch Gorge that features the waterfall is self explanatory from the car park, as the path is very well set out. We would advise that if you intend of visiting the Falls (you definitely should) then you should arrive early, as the car park gets full very quickly. The Falls of Measach is a popular attraction on the NC500 for it’s sheer beauty.

Victoria Falls

After a 1 hour drive and some lunch, we arrived at the second waterfall of the day – Victoria Falls. Named after Queen Victoria who visited the falls in 1877, the impressive falls are part of a National Nature Reserve. You can walk over the top of the falls (although the rocks are slippery!) and get a perfect view over Loch Maree. We found Victoria Falls to be much quieter than the Falls of Measach, this is because a D-tour is required in order to visit Victoria Falls. However, we can assure you that the D-tour is well worth it.

Torridon

From Victoria Falls it is a 40 minute drive to Torridon Estate. For dinner we were lucky enough to get booked in at the Torridon Hotel, one of the most prestigious five star hotels on the NC500 that we most definitely will stay at next time if our budget allowed! Though we didn’t splash the cash in the top end 1887 restaurant that the hotel offers, the Bo & Muc restaurant still served up one of the best meals of the road trip, and the hotels grounds alone were worth the visit – a seriously impressive place.

WHERE TO STAY

The Torridon Estate was a fantastic place to stay after Day 5 of the NC500. It’s grounds are spectacular and the rooms are spacious. However, if budget allows you should stay at the Torridon Hotel when you visit. The Torridon Hotel is one of the most prestigious hotels on the NC500 and staying there is a once in a lifetime experience.
